1986 was the year of the Fire Tiger. Less babies were born around that period because few wanted to risk having a tigress. Folklore has it that a tiger daughter brings ill luck to her family and will possibly jinx her husband. So frightening is a tiger woman that we are banned from entering the bedroom of a newly married couple or the bedroom of an expectant mother. Mothers scare their children into good behavior with threats of Tiger Great-Auntie coming for them. Here, then, is my journey to find fang and claw in a world that wants me tamed.
