Shirk - a term mostly identified as polytheism, but also used to describe evasion of responsibility or obtaining through trickery. Shirk in Disguise is a tale of Reality and Illusion, the Superficial and the Substantial, side by side; the story of Azeema, an intriguing personality with an interesting past and a devastating end. Having grown up with losses and denials, she had longed for the glitz and glamour she saw in others' lives. She came of age surrounded by grinning crocodiles and toxic relationships, clutching at straws. Coupled with her own personal faults which influenced her choices, these finally led her to Shirk in Disguise. However, her parents' choices, the society's views and the vengeful determination of an unforgiving soul also played a part in her story. Hence, it's beyond the story of one or two. Rather, it's a story of All, for All, with messages suitable for all reading ages.

Pages: 225 Protagonist: Nadia Habeeb Burning Bright is not a story about statistics, but of an over-achieving young lady, who is determined not to let sickle cell anemia stand in her way. Without notice, difficulties that Nadia Habeeb did not foresee complicate her health and love life, changing everything immensely. With the walls of life itself closing in on her, will she stand conqueror this time? If she does, what will be her fate back home in Nigeria, with a closed-off heart, and physical challenge? This is a story of a family struggling to maintain faith and hope in the face of severe emotional challenges, social upheaval, medical necessity, and the paradox of humanity. Set within the complexities of Nigerian culture, it is the story of young people trying to make their way in a world they didn't make. It is also a story of pain and redemption, of love lost and found, generational conflict, and the emergence of true faith. BlueInk Reviews described this story as, "...a solidly told story with nice detail about Nigerian culture and family dynamics and fully rendered characters..." Foreword Clarion reviews said about it, "...In Burning Bright, Maryam Awaisu introduces people to the realities of living with this disease in a novel that is as entertaining as it is informative." Steve Devitt had this to say: "The strongest parts of the book are Nadia's adventures within the healthcare system. Anyone who has grasped the missing emergency button will relate to this. Ms. Awaisu deals with the Nigerian medical system with sensitivity that is not lacking in Black humor." Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
