Ari Callahan has no idea how to talk to boys -- or how to talk to anyone for that matter. Enter Zac, the cute new guy in town who won't stop texting her. But is his interest real, or does he have a hidden agenda? ***** Found as a young child washed up on the beach, 17-year-old Ari Callahan has never uttered a word out loud to anyone -- not even her adoptive family. Psychologists have diagnosed her with a condition called selective mutism, but Ari can't help identifying with her namesake character, Ariel, the little mermaid in the fairytale whose voice was stolen by a sea witch. Mermaid-obsession aside, Ari's silence makes socializing tough. She's never had a boyfriend or been asked out on a date. Not until Zac, the confident new arrival in town, asks for her number. But Zac has his own reasons for texting with Ari. He's part of a movement to sabotage the artificial music app called SirenSong, threatening to render human singing obsolete. Zac's collaborators have scoured the globe in search of a singing voice perfect enough to break the SirenSong spell, and their search has led them straight to Ari's beachside town. Will her relationship with Zac help Ari find her voice and unlock the secrets of her origins? Or will he use her and leave her high and dry? Title: Ari and Zac (formerly The Mermaid Hypothesis) Content Warning: This story contains references to selective mutism, suicidal thoughts, and early childhood trauma.

"Make sure you are something before you fade to nothing," is a statement that Lucky takes to heart. At Bayridge High, a prestigious boarding school on the east coast of the U.S.A., they have a legend. A legend of tortured teens, and lost souls, a legend of tragedy. Bayridge has the highest suicide rate of the country, and one of the highest cumulative GPA's. Every cautionary tale, every kid who died young in that school kept a record in the suicide notebook. Detailing their thoughts, their feelings, their everyday lives until their lives were history. And Lucky knows he's next. He finds the notebook from subtle clues dropped by a mysterious upperclassman. He expects to find stories, beautiful and tragic in their nature. What he finds is so much more. A note: This story is labeled as sci-fi. I swear most of the weird things and things that seem slightly off around lucky will be scientifically fictionally explained. It becomes very very sci fi when the huge gigantic plot twist occurs. The world has never been a favorable place for the insects. Permanently branded as a pest and a nuisance, they have faced an impressive array of threats to their existence, from flyswatters to pesticides to the soles of human footwear. Yet they endured. They endured, and they thrived. They took up residence on this lovely blue-green planet long before the first human stood up on his two feet, and they will be here as ever-present witnesses to the workings of time as our cities are abandoned and reclaimed by the forces of nature. At the height of our power, we humans did all that could be done with our planet. We mapped, we charted, we analyzed, we conquered. We tamed and we eradicated. We silenced and we manipulated. Yet we could not seem to put a dent in the thick-skinned little class Insecta. Kill a roach, and there will always be another to take its place. Find a termite and you might as well have found a thousand. Through war and peace, famine and prosperity, wealth and bankruptcy, the insects endured. We are no longer the kings of this planet. The tables have turned. It is now our turn to endure. So we take inspiration from our exoskeleton-clad comrades and we endure. We endure. We MOLT Highest Ranking: #200
