Marylae wordt net als andere goedgetrainde elven opgeroepen om naar het Sterrenhof te gaan, waar ze haar training tot Vechter voort zal zetten. De reden van dit bezoek: steeds meer elven-in-opleiding, Wachten en Vechters lijken te verdwijnen. De lichamen worden teruggevonden, gemarkeerd met een omgekeerd, zwart klavertje; het teken van de Zwarte Elf, aangevallen door de zogeheten Zwarte Ruiters. De regenten zijn erover uit dat er drastische maatregelen getroffen moeten worden; elke elf met potentie zal opgeleid worden tot een Sterrenwacht - een soldaat die getraind is aan het Sterrenhof en daarmee dé beste trainingsopleiding van heel Het Koninkrijk der Seizoenen heeft.
