Ava is a fifteen-year-old girl on holiday with her family and best friend. The day after Christmas, she and her relatives head to the beach, where a tsunami strikes and washes away everything in sight. With numerous injuries, Ava manages to pull through, but loses sight of her loved ones. Meanwhile, she must push aside her sorrow and find shelter with all of the other orphans, where she meets a boy named Isaac. Similar to Ava's situation, Isaac's parents are nowhere to be found. Together, they search frantically for their families in all the hospitals and shelters, and do everything to overcome the trauma the tide has brought them. The city of Chicago has 2.7 million people, and about a quarter of them are under the age of twenty-five. While the rest of us sleep, these kids love, play, and dream in the Windy City- because really, why does New York get all the insomnia? Some toss and turn in bed, and some party it up like your parents warned you not to. For whatever reason, some Chicagoans can never shut their eyes. It is a completely unremarkable night, 1:48 AM on April 10th, 2015, and these are their stories. A small anthology of (mostly) unrelated short stories.

"A million words would not bring you back. I know, because I've tried. A million tears would not bring you back. I know, because I've cried." ------- James couldn't help but stare into her eyes. They were emerald green, speckled with dashes of chestnut brown. Alaska Taylor was most definitely the most graceful, beautiful person he had ever seen. The curtain of long brown hair fell over her shoulders, framing her unforgettable eyes. "I don't need a perfect life," She said, "I have a happy one." James thought she was strange. Strange, yet beautiful. She was the kind of girl he could stare at for hours without looking away. But it was her personality that threw him off. James didn't understand it. How Alaska could consider herself 'happy' after all these years. After all, her father had left her when she was young, her younger sister was deaf, and her mother was practically a zombie. Yet still, she managed a smile. Compared to Alaska, James was raised in the lap of luxury. Despite the fact that his parents were insanely strict and over-protective, his life was- though he hated to admit it- pretty good. But little did he know, all his plans would soon be ruined by one life-changing incident. Determined, he kept a spark of hope. And it all started with two words.
