Unfortunately, as she won medals and trophies, her parents didn't see any of their daughter's fame. Mr. Pyro was announced brain dead after a bad street fight. Her mother always wanted to surf, but she was paralyzed since a car accident long ago. One week before Katie won her first surfing competition, Ms. Pyro died of a heart attack. Katie was broken and terrified. She was only fifteen and she went through all of that. But friends and the ocean sewed her wounds together.
