He's having trouble believing that and he doesn't feel like he's worth the effort. You want to help him as much as you can so he knows he's loved too, and so he can feel true happiness from loving himself back as well. What starts out platonic becomes a romantic story that runs into the threads of deep despair with only a shred of hope to hang onto.
