Dominique Weasley knows she’s ugly. Unattractive, unappealing-just positively un-everything. She doesn’t have the same Veela look as her siblings, nor can she pull off the red hair like the rest of her beautiful cousins-she’s the odd one out, the sore thumb-the beast without her own beauty of a prince charming. Now in her seventh year, Dominique swears it’s going to be different-so she says goodbye to chocolate and sweets, hoping to look even a little like her sister and mother, with their willowy figures. Soon she cuts out everything, but it’s not working; Dominique is still ugly, and her sister is only the more beautiful. No one seems to notice Dominique wasting away, how her heart and soul along with body is slowly starving-except Ben Wood. Ben tries to reason with Dominique, but all she wants is for one person to call her pretty.

I was the 6th-grade "slut." And I kept a diary. So I decided to create The UnSlut Project in the hopes that my own diary entries could provide some perspective to girls who currently feel trapped and ashamed. I am publishing these entries one at a time, without changing a single word except for the names of the people involved. My limited commentary, which is confined to brackets in each entry, is meant to provide the relief of my current perspective, fifteen years later. The UnSlut Project: Working to undo the dangerous slut shaming in our schools, communities, media, and culture by sharing knowledge and experiences.
