As the war rages between Normals and Experiments, there continues to be a separation among several groups. Some become forced allies while others would do anything to darken the day of their enemies. The group sets off to find Sasha, Locke, and Erik. On their journey, Maxie reveals more of what the doctor did to her and Michelle's son finally awakens...but he's not quite the son she remembers. As they try to conjure a plan on what to do, the doctor makes another entrance with an even bigger weapon. Old friends return, but more blood will be shed. More lives will be stolen. The battle begins to feel like a never-ending spur of misery and defeat. Until an unlikely hero saves them all. When the inevitable World War III broke out, no one expected it to last as long as it did. After two years, a meddling scientist decides he'd had enough of the destruction between and within countries. He sets his mind to a dark place where ruthless, indestructible soldiers are possible, and he makes his fantasy reality. For the first couple of months, it seems the experiments are acting respectively, and many of the fighting countries' disputes are solved merely because of their intimidating presence. But playing with the laws of nature is a dangerous game, and nearly always ends in defeat. When the experiments steadily grow independent and realize the power they have, controlling them is out of the question. And now they're running rampant in the streets, lurking around every corner, hiding in every shadow. Humans are untrustworthy of each other, sticking to the rule of every man for themselves, which doesn't at all help the chaotic world they now live in. Evelyn wakes injured and alone yet somehow still in good health. Her first thoughts are to find Robbie and Sasha after they were taken by rabid experiments. However, if things were different before, they're completely flipped upside down now. Experiments are conquering the country state by state, enslaving the scared humans and eradicating the disobedient ones. With a twisted monarch fantasy, experiments are every bit the dictators people always feared to be ruled by. Except for Micah, an experiment who once appeared to be Evelyn's biggest threat but somehow slowly becomes her strongest ally after saving her. Micah suddenly has the choice of what side he's on--his own kind or Evelyn's. Problems only grow more severe when Harry returns, only he isn't at all the Harry he used to be. The doctor has operated on him again, creating a stronger, more deadlier beast for reasons unknown, though, it's skeptical he's working for Micah. Evelyn is back to her distant, closed off personality, not sparing anyone a single drop of her trust.
