An Italian Love Song

"Marrying for love is a mistake you'll regret for the rest of your life."
Kate is living by the life philosophy she inherited from her grandma on her 18th birthday, according to which, life will be a stroll in the park if one marries for reasons other than romantic love. She hits the jackpot when she marries Jim, who she knows will never elicit one romantic sentiment from her but is a kind and decent man. They live in Indiana and Kate keeps busy by going to school and taking care of Jim. In her spare time she writes gloomy poetry, and then cries over it. She is contented if a bit numb, until one day her friend suggests that she should do her last semester in Italy. She wants to dismiss the whole thing as ludicrous but it is a losing battle and eventually pitches the idea to Jim. He agrees under one condition: They are to start a family as soon as she gets back with no more nonsense from Kate.
In Florence, Kate has to share an apartment with 6 other females and one working toilet in the smallest bathroom known to man, with plumbing that seems to date back to the high Renaissance. Yet she loves every minute of her new life, even if her 'no love' attitude takes a bit of a beating as she witnesses her roommates' colorful adventures. She manages to rationalize any doubts away though, until one night she meets Luca and her world turns upside down. In spite of her best efforts, she falls for him, yet manages to technically remain faithful to Jim.
The happiest four months of her life come to an abrupt end with a surprise visit from Jim and they return to America only to discover that things cannot go back to the way they were before.
