In the rugged, fog-drenched mountains of West Virginia, the line between myth and monster is thin. For the Varkas family, that line is their life's work. Hidden away in a small, isolated town where the locals know better than to wander into the woods after dark, the Varkas siblings, Kai, Enzo, and Mae uphold a brutal family legacy. Following in the footsteps of their legendary father, Kai has taken up the mantle as the "Chief" of the North Tower. She is the telekinetic powerhouse who keeps the horrors of the Grey from spilling over into the world of the living. But the footsteps of her father are heavy to walk in. The "Price" of her power is a relentless, agonizing neural frequency that has left Kai isolated, battle-hardened, and trapped in a world of constant pain. For twelve years, she has survived on grit and duty, expecting to eventually burn out just as her father did. Then comes Taryn Lennox. A brilliant, sharp-witted tech specialist sent from the sterile, high-tech City, Taryn arrives with a mission to stabilize the crumbling North Tower. To Kai, she is a dangerous distraction; to the rest of the family, she is a last-ditch hope. Taryn brings more than just schematics, she brings the ability to tune the frequencies that Kai lives with. As Taryn works to "tune" the ancient generators to Kai's mind, she offers something the Chief hasn't felt in over a decade: Silence. Now, in the sudden, quiet stillness of the North Tower, a new tension rises. Kai is no longer blinded by pain, and Taryn finds herself drawn to the fierce, protective soul of the woman who holds the key to the veil. Now a different question haunts the Tower: Can Taryn save Kai from the power that is consuming her? Or will she lose herself to the magnetic pull of the warrior who was never supposed to let anyone in?

the drops of rain continued to hit the windshield and began to look like stars. the faster i drove the more they ran together like constellations, i found myself slowly looking over to her head resting on the car door. this she must have sinced, because soon after she opened her eyes to meet mine. i found her eyes held more beautiful constellations than the ones on my car or the night sky. before i realized it i had began to run off the road, she jerked upped and pushed the steering wheel back to the lane. luckily all around us was open fields and closed feelings. "jesus kid, pay attention" she said, and then leaned over and flipped on my wipers. it was then i knew that she would destroy my world, my constellations , and my heart.
