Peter tak ako každý vyššie postavený chlapec v Hesiari, hlavnom meste kráľovstva ľudí, navštevuje vojenskú školu. Vynikajúcim prospechom však zakrýva tajomstvo: neštíti sa drakov ani mágie. Jedného dňa narazí na osobu, ktorá mu jediným skutkom prevráti svet hore nohami. Ani nevie ako, ocitá sa vo svete o ktorom si smrteľníci iba šepkajú, plnom bytostí z nočných môr, mágie, tajomstiev a lží. A jeho jedinou oporou je náladová čarodejnica ktorá tvrdí že je najlepšou priateľkou jeho matky. Peter však tuší že za jej úmyslami je skryté niečo omnoho väčšie. Jedinou chybou spustila lavínu udalostí.
