(previously named but, hold on) | Part I of 'The Lost Words' trilogy | When the messiah is met with a hinderance on the road, even he, as a leader, needs a lending hand. ~ "Nathan, what's going on with you? Where are you staying now? If the police see you..." "Trust me I'm safe. I wasn't going to stay away until I could see you at least once, but I can't stay for long. I wish I could see the others, but it'd be too complicated. Here." He hands me a letter. A letter I hope will hold the answers I'm looking for. ~ [started November 14th 2014] [finished June 19th 2015] [Winner of @SykeContest 's Teen Fiction awards] [Highest ranked: #178 General Fiction, #367 Action] (self made covers. Violet Maverick had always harbored a crush for her best friend Finn Orland. But she knew better to keep it a secret when it came to Finn simply because they always worked so much better as friends. By now she’s forced herself to believe that Finn would never view the girl he used to see in diapers as girlfriend material. That is, until Finn decides he has a secret of his own that he’s dying to spill on the busiest night of the year for Violet: Christmas Eve. Working as one of Santa’s elves in the city’s largest mall during the holidays meant that Violet didn’t have time to go somewhere to “talk” like Finn wanted. Little does she know, Finn’s got a few tricks up his sleeves to make her ditch her post at the artificially snow covered house with Santa’s other helpers. Will Violet end up tangled beneath the Christmas lights with Finn by the end of the night? Or will she end up stuck beneath children’s grabby hands and broken tree ornaments before she gives Finn the chance to spill his secret?

Sara is the temperamental, quick-to-judge daughter of an upstanding Protestant family in the countryside of Cologne. To her, the war has always seemed a far-away nuisance. That is, until a warm night in the summer of 1944, when a jarring dose of reality is dumped upon their doorstep: young, fraught, and Jewish. Enter Benjamin Jastrow, the child of an old family friend and the new and indefinite resident of the Fleischers' attic. He is violently shy, coping with various stages of post-traumatic stress, and can hardly form a sentence without stammering—a nearly perfect opposite of the blustering Sara, who positively abhors his presence in her home. But for better or worse, they are the most important people in each others lives, and everything they thought they understood of their world will soon change forever.

They weren't supposed to meet. But life does that sometimes; it throws in a couple of new faces that bring you the utmost of joys in the most unlikeliest of places, and every now and then, you'll come across someone who changes you - someone who's genuine and wonderful and full of hope; someone who changes your perspective on the things that you had stored away in the cardboard box sitting in the dark corner of your closet, someone who opens up your eyes to new things; bright and beautiful things that you can't believe you hadn't seen before, someone who's iridescent. And once you meet them, nothing will ever compare.
