She nodded in acknowledgement but moved quickly, pulling up her trouser leg with one hand and grabbing a dagger with the other, throwing it in one fluid movement. I saw its journey through the air, spinning and swishing, and I knew I should have moved to the side but my body was sluggish. The last thought I had before it thudded into my chest was that perhaps I wanted it to hit me. Another vworp screeched around my body and this time it was too much. The knife disappeared, absorbed by the field, but it had already done the damage. I was falling, blood in my eyes, my mouth, my nose.
