Darkness. There was nothing but darkness. And pain. I suddenly wasn't aware of anything other than the darkness and pain. I was barely aware of my own consciousness. I couldn't think. I couldn't see. I couldn't scream. Was this what death felt like? Suddenly, the pain subsided. I felt what little consciousness I had left leaving me. The answer, by the way, was yes. This strange place was death, and there were no pearly gates, no fires of Hell, no rebirth, no new life. Just darkness, then pain, then nothing. Just the end.
