Our protagonist (As yet unnamed) is part of a secret society who's entire purpose is to protect normal humans from evil Imago: spirit beings that a person becomes when they die. This society can see them; normal people cannot. During a routine search-and-destroy mission, our hero gets an urgent warning: the Mother is angry, and she wants the Earth back, even if it means that humanity must die.
