Dahlia has never known anything other than the strange videos depicting normal human life behind the protection of a glass tube. Until one day she finds herself waking up covered in dirt and blood on her skin.
Dahlia has entered The Greenhouse Academy, a rigorous institute where she's taught to survive on nothing but water and sunlight, how to exchange whispers with wildflowers, and the secret to human imitation. There she is welcomed by children with green-tinted skin, vibrant eyes, and inhuman traits. Things like tough skin, poisonous lips, and thorn-tipped fingernails. All these things should be familiar.
Because she's just like them.
Dahlia is a member of the genus "Homo Plantae," the product of genetic engineering between humans and plants by the geoengineers of GHA. Classified as an "Iris," Dahlia realizes that she's much different than the videos of humans she was forced to watch as a Sapling: super-healing, emotion-driven camouflage, and pheromonal communication.
But not even that can keep her out of trouble. With tensions between other students running high, a run in with a handsome classmate with the strength of a Redwood, and a struggle to keep her grades up, Dahlia has her leaves full. Even deadlier, Dahlia catches word of a "Pruning." A rumor of massacre for the students of GHA.
Can Dahlia survive the Spring Semester? Or will she be uprooted...PERMANENTLY?
