[Ambys 2022: Mystery/Thriller Winner] Discovering a dead body just minutes from her cottage in the trees is the last thing Dray Dinley expects upon moving to the remote town of Hero. Being convinced by the town outcast and suspected murderer, Wells Walden, to join him in playing detective is even farther down that list, but here she is ignoring every red flag in the book. Dray thinks she finally found a spot to settle down and expand her freelance photography business, but instead stumbles upon a quiet town bursting with secrets. Unable to steer away from her desire to dig deeper, Dray follows Wells into a puzzle of stories dripping in danger, unexpected family connections, and years of manipulation. Despite Wells being at the center of it all, Dray can't fight the pull to stay by his side and sleuth her way to reveal the true story of Hero. -The second extract from the casefiles of D.I. Hawes and D.S. Gray- When D.S. Edmund Gray first arrived on the doorstep of Coates Hill Preparatory School for Boys, I.D. in one hand and takeaway cup of steaming coffee in the other, his initial reaction was how glad he was not to have gone there. His companion, a certain D.I. Cynthia Hawes, however, was more concerned about how easy it looked to climb out if the large, ornate Gothic style windows on the upper floors and make your way safely (ish) down to the ground below. And to D.I. Hawes's intent amusement, not that she would ever admit it to another living soul, it seemed one of the young boys had done just that. Previous Hawes&Gray cases: #1. #1 Mystery | #1 Thriller | #1 Young Adult Have you ever known someone more than you know yourself? Known them so inside out that you could finish their sentences and know what they're thinking, just with a glance? That was Casey and I. We were the ultimate best friends. We knew more than we should about each other. I was hopelessly and undeniably in love with him. I still remember the day perfectly. I wish I could say there was something to hint that it was coming. There was nothing. I thought I knew everything about him. Apparently not. He killed himself and a part of me died along with him. He was dead, and so was I. Or, so I thought. ** Cover by Reachingformorex ** © 2017 by LaurenJ22. All rights reserved.
