Korea's flashy lights are vivid and captivating, along with their unique food and beautiful cities. A clear example of this can be seen through their pop music, which has recently spread across other nations and gained a global audience. However, past all of the colorful scenery lies dark undertones. From traumatizing beauty products to organ harvesting, Korea's urban legends show that they don't only have a good taste in music, but a good taste in horror as well. Riverly trains as an apprentice healer. Every day, she works tirelessly to mend the broken and bloodied Imperial soldiers who protect the Empire from the vicious forces of a radical cleric. And, every day, the war chews up and spits out the lives of conscripts. When a soldier appears in need of saving, Riverly's skills and quick thinking are not enough. Exhausted and frustrated by yet another loss, she makes a rash decision that changes the trajectory of his and her fates: She accidentally resurrects him from the afterlife. The reward for her efforts? The soldier orders Riverly by sword-point to meet the man commanding the Imperial forces, the Lord High Commander, a man known for his cunning and brutal tactics. What Riverly finds in the mysterious commander, however, is something both familiar and treacherous. Where she can snatch life away from the grip of death, he can call upon the deadly shades of the netherworld to strip men of their souls. Riverly now must make a choice: Enter the Lord High Commander's service and win the war, while risking her humanity and freedom, or flee and allow the shadow of death to grow across the Empire and endanger everyone she loves. Mina doesn't live; she survives. Orphaned as a child and left to the glossy black streets of Vide Noir, Mina struggles each day to stay alive. She has the city's grid memorized. She knows the First Watch's patrol routes and when the shopkeepers take their breaks. And, she has a secret weapon: Persuasion. With a few words, she can bend the will of the most stubborn to meet her desires. When her friends are captured by the head of the thieves' guild, Mina is given a choice. She can watch her friends die, or she can help the guild pull off a dangerous heist: Break into the late Queen's bower and steal her ruby necklace during the night of the Winter's Feast. Armed with nothing more than her skill at persuasion and a simple maid's uniform, Mina infiltrates the palace. Her hopes of success, however, are instantly dashed when she is discovered by none other than the Commander of the First Order, a man who protects the Kingdom's borders from the gathering darkness that threatens to destroy humanity. For the first time in her life, Mina cannot talk her way out of her trouble. Realizing Mina's ability to enchant her listeners, the Commander makes her a tempting offer. To avoid the hangman's noose, she must join him in the battle against the God of Darkness, whose sinister forces threaten to ravage Vide Noir and everything around it. If swords and bullets cannot fell the ancient evil that threatens their existence, then maybe words can.

All nineteen-year-old Hisae wants is to find her sister. The sister who was ripped out of her arms during a vicious attack when she was only twelve. The attack left her physically and emotionally crippled, but she endures in the slums of Onibi, where her sister was kidnapped. Every morning she trudges to her stall in the market, where she paints words that possess the ability to bend the mind and will of those who see them. She is a master calligrapher, and, with the money she earns at the market, she bribes her way to neighboring settlement, Frauholle, where she believes her sister was taken. Her treks to Frauholle take on greater urgency when dead bodies begin piling up in the streets of Hanging Dog, the neighborhood connecting the two settlements. Rumors swirl that a blade tester has taken up residence in Frauholle and has begun testing his creations on the townsfolk in both Onibi and Frauholle. Hisae ignores the warnings until she witnesses the violent murder of one of her close friends. While the rumors may have been true that a blade tester is on the loose, they leave out the manner in which he slays his victims: By using his sword to pull the souls from their bodies. With only her wits and her ability to weave spells with her calligraphy, Hisae must either put an end to the blade tester's reign of terror or escape the slums with her sister before she or her sister becomes his next victim.
