From the cesspool of Silas Island into the underworld of Two Town, the battle for Valaris continues. The Darak Or Margus unleashes his soltakin army and at his side is the dara-witch Infinity and her Darkling Horde. Dreams and visions plague Torrullin; he battles to find himself when fate appears omnipotent and love ever beyond his reach. He needs the love his father Taranis offers, but the fiery Saska stands between them… The extinct Gosa volcano erupts as sacred sites implode to create earthquakes and tidal waves…a monster wave is unleashed…headed to an epic confrontation before an ancient and powerful golden seat…

Rayne of the Mantle meanwhile travels to Farinwood to find the magician Aven to confirm rumours of Infinity’s presence on Valaris. He isn't’t prepared for what he actually finds. Changeling children bent on murder, a secret Society of Sorcerers, the mysterious waif Averroes…and the Maghdim Medaillon, the magical coin that creates a thread of light between two realms. Rayne dreams of a little girl from another world crying for help and cannot fathom how that is likely, until he meets the Guardians in the Great Forest of Valaris. When they reveal the presence of a tear in space, Rayne understands he is being gathered to fulfil his destiny… And on Ardosia a little girl awakes from a nightmare, screaming: ‘It will all burn, daddy!’ Another awakes, a legendary figure from the forgotten past, creator of the Maghdim Medaillon, the true ruler of both Valaris and Ardosia. His time is now. There is a darkness coming.

We return to Valaris, Land of Skies, where the war of eternal darkness is about to commence. Hidden from humankind on Valaris are fourteen sacred Valleur sites, each built upon a node of power. Vannis of the Valleur advocates unveiling the sites to restore balance to the earth, balance he claims will aid them in the fight against Margus. The Darak Or has other ideas, and unleashes his soltakin… In the north Averroes discovers her true past and together she and Kylan run the gauntlet of the Maze. Nearby Kisha, Mordan, Cristi and Samson prepare the clans of old for the darkness about to befall them. In the south Vannis, Rayne and Saska continue the unveiling process, begun with the Square Pyramid and the Obelisk, at the ruins of the White Palace, along with the charismatic little Falcon, Phet. Taranis and the Guardians delve arcane ritual in the Dome in an attempt to find the answers to the ending of soltakin…and wonder when the dara-witch Infinity will bring her Darkling Horde into the mix. Meanwhile McSee, unmasked as traitor, meets the crazy Lanto and together they hatch a bold plan, one they set into action during an epic summer storm, one involving a pirate and ancient loot. Rayne confers with the Mantle and begins the internal battle that will change all. It began for him on Ardosia when he touched Vannis only to release blue sparks between them. The ruling house is almost extinct. How, therefore, does a Valla recognise the blood for the future? By the blue flame of trebac. Kinfire. The legendary Vannis is kin to him, but there is more in store for Rayne than the reality of this profound kinship. The kinfire tree is larger with branches hidden in its foliage, a condition Rayne suspects, a greater truth he must reveal… Is reincarnation possible? Who will Rayne become when that question is finally answered? Will an answer aid against the approaching darkness?
