Since long ago, stories about mermaids have been passed down, generation through generation. The stories almost always changed, but one thing was in common, Mermaids were creatures to be feared.
Fenella Blair was the wife of the Scottish sailor Ainsley Blair, who often left her at home. Ever since she was a young girl, she had wanted to explore, and figured marrying a sailor would get her out of Scotland and into the sea. However, every time she asked, pleaded, even begged her to allow her to come, his answer was always the same. No.
Eventually, Fenella decides to take matters into her own hands and stows away with Ainsley to sea, only to be thrown overboard with her legs tied together. The last thing she hears Ainsley say before she meets the cold water below reminds her of what her father used to tell her, with an evil twist to it, and suddenly she regrets ever marrying him.
" Take the wife from home, sailors bewarn. Keep the sea from the wife, mermaids strife. Had you not come, the mermaids would be satisfied. But no. Fenella must disrespect her husband. You shall disrespect me no more"
