Archie, on the other hand, was the son of Fred Andrews, the nameless boy's social worker. He was adventurous, different, and to the boy's surprise, cute. Archie was probably the first person the boy had ever come across that stared at him with such neutrality as he did regularly. The boy found that intriguing. Mitch is the new kid at school, and he almost always has his nose in a comic book or just a book such as Harry Potter. Scott notices he likes comic books, and starts talking to him. When Scott sees what's inside the comic, he realizes something about Mitch that gives him a little bit of hope between the two of them.
