A Study in Scarlet is a 1887 detective novel by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1886, the story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become two of the most famous characters in popular fiction. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, an amateur detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." The Holmesian Harriet Harrison never thought that the day would come when their archnemesis Moriartian faction beat them in the House War. Her competitive attitude toward her class rival Morrie Moreno intensifies, each trying to outsmart and outmaneuver the other. But trouble does not stop there. The most charming Adlerian Aiden Alterra commits himself to a "secret mission" and starts pestering Harriet. The seemingly mute Wilhelmina Williams from the Watsonian faction also gets dragged along with the three in a string of mysterious incidents that will plague the university. Despite their dissenting motivations and unique personalities, the four will have no choice but to work together as a team toward one common goal and against one common enemy. The classes begin.
