Kathrine Hughes is a young woman who recently moved from the country to the bustling city of London to begin a new independent chapter of her life. Gabriel, the stoic lawyer, Invites her to a seemingly casual dinner party hosted in the home of the reputable medical doctor Hastie Lanyon. While there, a tall, smooth-faced gentleman catches her eye while standing over the fire, his brow furrowed in contemplation.
