Mark awakes in a dark room confronted by a strange voice warning him of a dangerous artificial intelligence (AI) named Saros that it claims will destroy life as we know it. The being asks him to wipe out the AI, but doing so would ruin his career as Saros's chief programmer.

In the aftermath of a nuclear war, a father and his 11-year-old daughter set out on a journey to find his wife. They must survive off the land, evading gangs and Russian soldiers, as they make their way from Colorado to Alaska.
