Lance was born with wings, just like half of the population of Earth. During all of their adventures through the universe not once did Lance feel like he was worth less than any of the other paladins. That is until they land on one such planet that only sees Lance as a pretty trophy to cart around. One of their demands for an alliance is for him to show off his wings in the city perched on the arm of the Black Paladin.

Lance has forgotten that feeling, ever since team voltron had been formed he was he seventh wheel, even when he did something Keith would always be patted on the back for it, becoming the eight wheel after they rescued Matt. So he left. left the paladins with their problems, left everything behind and started his own, brand new life as the white paladin.

Lance is used to being unappreciated on the team but he didn't think that the team would blatantly ignore the efforts that he put in.

When Lance discovered that Allura was his sister after falling from the cryopod, he thought that his life would become better. He didn't think that his team would begin to push him away. One person can only take so much after all.

Samuel Holt was given the opportunity to recruit a genius kid from Cuba. As you might have guessed, that kid was Lance McClain. Although we all know that Lance made it to the Garrison and eventually to Voltron; the journey there wasn't as simple as it might sound.

Shiro forgot all about his relationship with Lance after he went missing on the mission to Kerberos, dispute the promises that they made to each other. Maybe his ring would remind him of what he lost.
