Link did all he had to do. He defeated Calamity Ganon he activated and completed all the shrines. He was done. However when Princess Zelda perishes after the battle with Ganon she has one clear dying request: Link has to be the next ruler of Hyrule.

The prince of the Zoras has fallen madly in love with the Hylian Champion. Link, oblivious to these feelings that were so inexplicably apparent, agreed to stay with the Zoras for a few weeks after his great feat of defeating Calamity Gabon. With Hyrule on the verge of destruction from the massive civil war that's broken out, Link questions whether or not his life should come to an end. Then, he meets the charming Zora prince, Sidon. Sidon's positive attitude lifts Link's spirits up, and makes him think that maybe there is an end to this war. Zelda loves Link dearly, but sometimes she can get caught up in her duties and forget to give Link the credit and appreciation the Hero of Hyrule deserves. The Princess soon realizes that Sidon may be her last resort at earning Link's trust again.
