Hiccup runs away from Berk with Toothless (after the fight with the Nadder in the ring). Astrid never stopped him and the romantic flight never happened. Many years later, Hiccup has built a new life for himself where his talents are appreciated and he is well-respected. He has many allies and friends, but also many enemies. He hopes to never return to Berk, but unforeseen circumstances force his hand: and he must face his past, in order to have a future. Hiccup must find a way to protect everything he has worked so hard for, and he must decide whether save the people who once called him a "fishbone". Hiccup and Astrid are best friends since they were 7 years, but because Hiccup is Hiccup and Astrid hangs out with him they're bullied by other teens. One day Hiccup shoots down a Night Fury but nobody believes him except Astrid. Together they go into the forest to look for him but not only they found him but also 3 other Night Furies and two Dragon riders. What will Hiccup and Astrid do? Will the riders accept them as fellow riders or will they try to kill them? And where are they even from?

After being chosen to kill the Monstrous Nightmare, Hiccup disappears and everyone assumes he is dead. But when Berk is under threat from Dragon Flyers, a mysterious dragon master is called on for help.

Hiccup runs away with Toothless after being confronted by Astrid at the cove. But before their new life has even really began, Hiccup gets attacked by a savage, giving him a life threatening injury.
