The world is in harmony when the dark mages (the forsworn) wage a war against the Theinsford mages one of whom is Linleys father , his father dies but now Linley inherits his prowess and is now up to him to be a mage and have his revenge on the Forsworn. The story describes his journey as he goes to the magic academy and trains.
