Eleanor Parks was born into the Inside - one of the few safe havens that survived World War Four. She's learned to bite her tongue against the many oppressive, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, and generally rude remarks made by the Keepers and other people of status, out of fear of getting banished. Eleanor's heard things of the Outside; she's heard about the countless crimes, the sky-high poverty rate, the endless cries of people wishing for a second chance. But of course, she's smart enough to know that these are all simply rumors, since no one has ever returned to the Inside once banished to the Outside.
But when Eleanor's friends drag her to an illegal party and the night takes a turn for the worse, she finds herself on the Outside with a mismatched group of new friends. Knowing that she only has so much time until the Keepers realize she isn't on the Inside, Eleanor convinces the group to help her find a way back home.
But there are things Eleanor doesn't know - vital secrets that could change her life forever. She soon finds herself conflicted between who to believe and who to trust, knowing that one wrong decision could certainly end the lives of thousands, including herself and everyone she loves.
