For Ellie Siegfried, her diary is her closet friend and most trusted confidant, viewed more as a little sister than a notebook.
For Kai Lang, journaling is only something he does because his therapist advised him to, in order to cope with the anxiety that threatens to overcome him.
Through an unexpected and awkward meeting in the library, the two's stories become intertwined. These stories are told through their journal entries, which record the same events, through two very different lenses.
But the more they get to know one another, Ellie and Kai discover that they bring things out in each other that they never knew existed. When Ellie befriends Kai's family, her own family struggles come bubbling up to the surface-struggles she'd tried to bury and forget.
And although Kai swore to never fall in love, or even make a close friend, perhaps the sanctuary he's needed all along isn't found in a journal, but in the strange and optimistic girl who stole his book in the library.
