There is no escape, not for me. I have tried so hard to forget but the memories keep coming back. I don't sleep anymore, if I close my eyes my mind floods with their screams. The screams of those I've hurt, because I murdered the ones they love. I can't keep running, I have no where to run. I can't hide, they will find me. There is no way out of the endless shadows. I am a slave to the darkness. And no matter how much I fight, I will never be free.

The Fourth Age dawned in peace. But peace is a seed easily withered. Long have the kingdoms of Men prospered beneath the rule of the King Elessar, and in the North, Gerithor, once a ranger and warrior of renown, now serves as Warden, keeping order in a land once scarred by war. Though he trains his children in the ways of leadership and arms, his own days of high adventure seem long behind him. But the East does not sleep. When a cloaked stranger brings word of a rising darkness beyond the lands of Mordor, old fears stir anew. A forgotten threat, older than the crowns of Men, begins to stir-and the burden of defiance falls not to the heroes of old, but to their sons and daughters. Now the Children of the North must rise, for the fate of Middle-earth once more hangs by a thread.

This isn't your ordinary writing contest: for each round, there will be various topics that must be addressed by a short story. Sounds normal, right? It's not! Each prompt will be focused on a geographic location of Middle Earth, many of which receive little to no attention. So strap on your leather boots and shoulder your travel pack, because we're going on an adventure!! Title credit goes to @Silvan_Elleth, who wanted me to make a point of it being her idea.

Zimruphân is no lord. He is no Gondorian, he is no king. Harad is a harsh place for a weak soul. When scraping together coin as a mercenary, even sinking to a bandit when times are hard, life out on the sands can be an easy way to get killed. That is, if you lack the wits. And Zimruphân's seen his fair share of surprise. However, things will drastically change when a dangerous storm separates him from his mission and the partner he traveled with. Alone, he wanders, until crossing paths with another, beaten stray. While everything is in perspective, would it be a sin to shift his view on the land he inhabits? I wasn't always this way. I wasn't always a monster. I used to have a home, and a family. I was kind, good, filled with life. I never did anything wrong. So why did it happen? Why was everything that I loved taken away from me? Why was I stripped of my light? Why do bad things happen to good people? I have no answers, and I doubt that anyone does. My story is one of loss, betrayal, and pain. My story does not have a happy ending, and after everything I have done, I do not deserve one.

Sauron has been defeated. The One Ring has been destroyed. Peace has returned to Middle Earth once again. Or so it seems... A new enemy has appeared in Middle Earth, stronger and more powerful then any before him.
