During a hot Arizona summer volunteering at a nursing home, troubled teen Dudley and eccentric newbie Naya find themselves growing closer over the poems of a mysterious elderly woman with dementia who disappeared decades ago. ***** Dudley Warrington is barely getting by. Haunted by the tragic death of his mother and heartbroken from a recent breakup, each day is a struggle. When he finds himself paired with quirky new student Naya Stephens for a volunteer programme at a local nursing home, Dudley expects a long, boring summer. What he doesn't expect is Marie Von Delden, a mysterious resident with dementia who disappeared in another state over forty years ago under a different name. A former aspiring poet, Marie can't recall anything about where she went, but her poems give the teens a glimpse into the life she may have had. Connected by a shared mission and a similar desire to escape their dark secrets, Dudley and Naya soon discover the true challenge may not be in unraveling the past, but in determining their own futures. [[word count: 70,000 - 80,000]] 2018 Watty Winner Content warning: This story deals with sensitive subject matter around sexual and physical abuse and mental illness, including suicide

Five slammed his butter knife into the table, not breaking eye contact with their father, unable to see everyone's horrified stares. Y/n tore her eyes away from him to the knife that had landed not far from her hand. "I have a question." Five stated bitterly, letting go of the knife that jutted out of the table. "Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes. You are interrupting Herr Carlson." Reginald dismissed turning back to his meal. Their father's unwillingness to listen or care made Five's blood boil. He pushed his plate away and turned back to their father. "I want to time travel." Five demanded threateningly. Their father looked at him unalarmed at his outburst. "No." He said, no longer entertained by the matter not that he shown he was before. Just him replying to Five was enough for everyone to feel shocked. "But I'm ready. I've been practicing my spatial jumps, just like you said." Five argued appearing beside their father. "See?" He gestured to himself as proof. Reginald didn't even look up from his plate, unamazed with Five's gift. "A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn." Reginald said waving a hand. Everyone went back to their meals and Five looked angrily at them before locking eyes with Y/n, who gave him a pleading look. She hoped he would just sit down before the situation escalated. "Well, I don't get it." Five mumbled. "Hence the reason you're not ready." Reginald replied. "I'm not afraid." Five countered. "Fear isn't the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable. Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore." Reginald said turning to Five. Five shook his head before turning to run. "Number Five!" Y/n quickly stood going after him. "Number Eight!"

"You really don't remember me?" His eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I'm sorry but... I can't say I do," I replied with a frown. The look he gave me was enough to make me want to lie. To say that I do remember him but... I really don't.

Karen Marie Moning, Shadowfever Tessa O'Connell is a girl as ordinary as they come-or so she thinks. Her aim for senior year is to keep her head down yet somehow manage to convince her childhood love Jay Stone to love her back. What she isn't prepared for is for Jay's brother, Cole to return to town and change the life she's always been seemingly content to live. Tall, gorgeous as all hell and a bad boy with ocean blue eyes and the perfect edge of adorability, he was her greatest tormentor, her number one enemy. But the guy that's come back is like no one Tessa's ever come across. He challenges her, he tests her limits, he forces her to bring out the girl she's long ago buried under a veil of mediocrity and most of all he compels her to consider that perhaps the boy that infuriates her to the point of no return might just her guardian angel. Warning: The story comes with a bad boy notorious for making you swoon, inducing hysterical laughter and making you question whether you could purchase a clone on eBay.
