"Tennis is a relationship. It's like we're in love. Or like we don't exist. We go somewhere really beautiful together." Every single person on the 2006 junior circuit knew the name Tashi Duncan. She was a force of nature on the court-loud, violent, and utterly dominant. Everyone worshiped her. Everyone bent to her will. Except Naomi Sloane. Sleek, calculated, and carrying herself with a quiet, high-fashion elegance that money couldn't buy, Naomi was the only girl in the bracket who didn't just watch Tashi-she matched her. While boys like Art Donaldson and Patrick Zweig spent their days tripping over themselves just to catch Tashi's eye, Naomi and Tashi were locked in a completely different game. A silent promise written across the net, where the only thing that mattered was who broke first. From the elite country clubs of New York to the prestigious courts of Stanford, and all the way to a tense, rain-slicked Challenger match in New Rochelle thirteen years later-nothing changes. Art and Patrick are still chasing a prize they can't quite hold. Tashi is still playing god with everyone's careers. And Naomi Sloane is still standing right in the center of the court, refusing to move, proving that in a game built on obsession, the most dangerous player is the one who refuses to lose. Because when fire meets ice, someone has to burn.

For a long moment, he said nothing. Then, quietly, almost ashamed of the sound of his own voice, he spoke. "Please," he whispered. The word cracked. "I didn't mean to go there again." His breath shuddered. He swallowed hard, "I know what I am. I know what lives in me. I thought I had buried it. I thought You helped me bury it." His eyes burned now. Tears slipped free and he didn't wipe them away. "I didn't stop," he went on, voice breaking. "I didn't stop when I should have. I wanted him to hurt. I wanted it." He closed his eyes, forehead lowering. "I know that's not You," he said. "I know that wasn't You moving through me." This story remains faithful to the characters and narrative established in the film, carrying forward their defining traits and conflicts. Into this fragile equilibrium enters Maeve; a new presence; calm, quietly confident, and emotionally literate, walking on thin ice, whose quiet doubts and choices begin to fracture what was meant to remain sealed. Author's Note The first two chapters are deliberately slow and atmospheric, meant to establish the setting and emotional undercurrents of the story. (Might seem dry and nothing really happens there, so I made them as short as possible). The main plot begins to take shape from Chapter Three onward. Based on the film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knive Out Mystery.
