As I stepped forward, I fisted my shaking fingers. The sound of applause echoed, but in my head, it felt like taunts. I trembled as the spotlight found me; whispers filled the room, always doubting my capabilities.
As I reached the stage, my grandfather gave me his reassuring smile, as always. I touched his feet out of respect, then turned towards the people of this company, looking at me with hope. I felt a sharp pain in my heart as I remembered the emptiness in our lives.
The voices in my head returned, reminding me why I didn't deserve this. I shouldn't be here, before everyone I had caused harm to. But here I was, standing before them, promising to provide the future and everything they deserved, which had been destroyed because of me.
My lips trembled before I tried to speak. Then, I found him in the crowd - the man who lived to defeat me. His eyes were challenging, looking straight into mine, fading every other voice. Something changed; my fingers held the microphone with newfound confidence.
I took a deep breath, looked at the crowd, and started my speech.
