The summer following her 16th birthday, Natalie Pierce experiences the death of Daisy - the dolphin at the local aquarium in the seaside town of North Carolina and Natalie's best friend. Unable and unwilling to process this new-fallen tragedy, Natalie takes her kayak to the ocean. Though the ocean had claimed the lives of her parents in a sailing wreck when Natalie was only an infant, it is still the only place she manages to find peace.
Instead of blissful calm as she had expected, an unpredictable summer storm strikes swiftly and Natalie is thrown into the brutally churning waters. Disoriented and frantic, Natalie discovers a curious dolphin lingering nearby and a shocking, newfound ability to breathe underwater. Stunned but determined to uncover the meaning of this power, she manages to follow the eccentric dolphin into the depths of the ocean.
What she discovers is a magnificent underwater kingdom sprawling across the ocean floor. She discovers that her life may be more linked to this new world than she could have ever imagined. She is immediately thrown into training, as a long-standing prophecy marks her as the chosen one for a perilous quest. William, a young resident of the kingdom and Natalie's assigned mentor, instructs her in the art of battle - a skill she is forced to master as she is the only person capable of saving this kingdom from destruction.
Traversing the depths of the ocean, the weight of an entire kingdom rests on Natalie's shoulders. She must decide what world she wants to be a part of: the ocean that captured the lives of her parents or her old life on land. If Natalie is to discover her true identity and her place in the kingdom, she must first save it from a menacing outside force.
