An 'Aim to Engage' sci-fi story of exactly 500 words. °°° Don't get me wrong. I had plenty of ambition when I graduated from Deimos Flight Academy with dual degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and Navigation. Then, the goal was clear, join the Brigade and help further humanity's knowledge of the Terran solar system our ancestors colonized. Maybe even find proof of alien lifeforms. But as it turns out, you can only 'boldly go' if you've already boldly gone to the right schools. So you make do, as they say. Piloting a freighter for Virago might not have been the plan, but at least it pays the bills. Even if the company is a soul-sucking mega-corporation that likes to treat its employees no different than the commodities that it resells, packs, and delivers. Paid on the cheap and shipped for free anywhere in the known galaxy. Which brings me here, millions of miles from home in the outer reaches of our system, gawking alongside the delivery guys at something we shouldn't be transporting. Oh god, I should've never taken this job. °°° Highest Rank: #2 in 'Aim to Engage'

This is the story of two men. One bad man? One good man? I don't even know anymore. I'll tell the story and you can decide which side of the moral spectrum we're on. I met him on a cold morning before dawn; back then we were both boys. He was stealing food from my father's pantry. That sounds like something a bad guy would do, right? But I mean, I was stealing food from the pantry too. His name was Christopher. He was one of the world's top superheroes, with a successful save rate of ninety-eight percent. He had saved hundreds, thousands, even millions, maybe. We had grown together in a sense. We weren't together all the time, but we grew from boys to men at the same time and somewhere along the line we swapped paths. From bad to good, good to bad, our sides had flipped more times than a coin. Even when he died, our sides had flipped again. He didn't just die, though. He was killed. And I killed him.

Cassandra Flanagan has just been given the unwinnable assignment. An officer in His Majesty's Royal Armed Space Forces of the Star Commonwealth, and a self-professed "accidental" noblewoman, Cassandra has gathered more than her share of enemies. Foremost among them is the man who sits upon the Commonwealth's throne, King Mahomet. Eager to get her out of the way of his son's succession, he sends Cassandra to the Azagnani Sector; a hotbed of separatist movements, with virtually no support, and orders to strike first. While he believes Cassandra's failure to be all but assured, he hasn't accounted for two things: Cassandra's determination; and her young niece Salibelle, a freshly-commissioned Intelligence officer. Together, Cassandra and Sallibelle must piece together clues that will link the Azagnani separatists to Azagnani's most prominent noble, Otto von Brauneis. However, when those clues suggest a connection deep inside the Solar Empire ... the enemy of the Commonwealth and all other free star nations; Cassandra and Sallibelle find themselves in a high-stakes game of life or death.
