After Johnny died, everyone spun out of control in a way none of them had ever experienced before. Darry was walking on eggshells with the courts, careful not to make even one mistake, in fear of losing custody of his brothers while also masking the pain of losing a close friend. Sodapop was a closet mess, finding it harder and harder each minute to keep up a smile. The losses he was suffering were too much too soon for him to handle. But who could he turn to for help? Pony boy wasn't hiding his bad coping or multitude of cigarette packs lying around the house. He just lost his best buddy- and now he had to worry about Dallas. After Johnny died, Dallas had gone berserk. It hit him hardest. Two-bit was forcing a smile as he threw back bottles of beer and ignored any source of conversation. It was his way of coping. Meanwhile Steve had a hard time shutting up about it. Everyone was on edge, sleep deprived, and stressed to the max. How could they be there for eachother when they were falling apart themselves? Who was going to help Sodapop pull himself out of his dark thoughts? And would Dallas be able to get through this? Who knows. (StevePop eventually. Dallyboy eventually. Angst. Depressive episodes. After Ponyboy loses both his parents in an auto wreck and his friends in the blink of an eye, he loses the one he loves the most.

"I never meant to hurt anyone," Soda called. "What's done is done, Soda, and you can't change it," Darry said his voice angerier than I'd ever heard it. Soda had tears briming his eyes when he pulled out his switchblade. Darry wasn't paying attention but I noticed. I let out a small scream and all of a sudden, time stood still.

Darry gets sick and Pony, Soda, and the gang try to take care of him.

The strange thing for Sodapop, was that he seemed to be a magnet for the sexes... And yes, I did mean plural. Soda was constantly drawing in females from all corners from the East and the West. He'd be at work, doing his job, and just outside was a swarm of women, both greaser and soc, just waiting for him to come out so they could get a look of his toned, sweating body... And then he'd come home, and it wasn't any better. Darry and Ponyboy looked at him, but not in the way Dally eyed him in the evenings. I mean, why else would that boy want Soda to go cause trouble with him, and nobody else? Dall would stare at him from across the lot, from across the yard, room, anywhere Soda was across from him, he'd stare. And I have to be honest, Soda wasn't any better than Dally. In fact, most of the gang was sure Soda purposefully leaned over counter tops, laid back so one leg hung off the couch, exposing his stomach and chest in such a way, Soda's brothers exploded into red blushes, they were sure that he made himself as enticing as possible, just to see how Dally reacted. Oh how Dally would react... He'd bite his lip, and his eyes would rove. And Sodapop would smirk suggestively. And yet, even as all of this flirtation was going on, neither of them made a move. Not one. Dally didn't touch him. Soda didn't hint that he wanted to be touched.

Sometimes, when you get less sleep, you tend to look at the world differently. Struggling in finances and insomnia-induced nights, Sodapop is stuck finding ways to deal with less sleep. Without much else to do, Soda decides to take more risks, feeling as though he is the one less member of the family not doing enough. Just as soon as a new job offer arises out of the blue, Soda feels like he's not competent enough, but Steve may bring the benefit of the doubt.
