'They wore uniform grey, their expression hard and distant, their muscles taut with expectation, as if at any moment they were ready to lead an assault, to carry out orders, to kill, to die. And yet they were. Kingston had trained these children to kill at a word, to obey their masters without question. They were machines, the ultimate weapons in modern warfare. Children, as young as seven and as old as eighteen, stood impeccable and fearless, but it was what was hidden in their minds that was to be feared most of all.' Nineteen-year-old Charlotte Owens has entered her final year at Kingston Academy and, together with her best friends, she plans on making it through the year in one piece, away from the scrutinising eye of the headmaster and the founder's son. However, when she discovers that she has been thrust into the role of Head Girl, working alongside a boy she can hardly stand, not only are her plans for anonymity destroyed, but her plans for making it through the year at all seem to be in danger of becoming a wistful dream. Charlotte finds herself faced with the monstrous task of learning to play a game for survival in a world that seems determined to destroy her. Not only fighting for her life, Charlotte must also fight to gain control over the genetic alterations that plague her mind, in an effort to become the soldier she must be. A dark and tense tale of the battle between good and evil, Altered brings to life a strange and deadly world full of power and intrigue, as well as casting light on many secrets that so many hoped would remain undiscovered. This story was previously known as "The Awakening". ~*~ "One... two... three... one... two... three... a million... is that number right?" A figure less voice echoed. "Hello? Who's there?" Caliope asked, focusing on that voice. "One... two... who? A million... a billion... no, it's more... a legion..." Silence. She had seen too many horror movies and heard too many stories about that single word to overpass its meaning. The voice went quiet, yet she was still unable to see where it came from. She rubbed her eyes and all she could see around her was a thick path in a jungle-like scene. She didn't remember how she got there, but she knew it was for something important. Her eyes focused on the far end of the path and all she could see were more trees. She turned to the opposite side and found just the same. "One... two... billions... but always back at one..." the voice resumed it's counting. "Where are you? Who are you?" ~*~ -Her name is Caliope, and when she was a young girl, she never believed in happy endings. For her, there was nothing more than what you see in front of you. All she needed was her best friend Vanessa. Her background is very simple; a foster child with foster parents that were everything but warm and caring. Regardless of that, she became a smart and responsible young woman, ready for whatever came her way. At least that is what she thought. Her new job interview changed her life. It changed everything she ever believed in, and what she thought it was real. Her new boss is an amazing woman who has a son, something different from what he is made out to be. As she discovers the hidden truth about her boss and her son, she has to prepare herself for a whole new world that will unfold to her. ~*~ Intro collaboration with my loyal reader @GabrielleCarden Original Picture from the cover made by Marcus J. Well, that's because he's not human. Once he smokes, he becomes able to control whatever is near him. Even though inhaling smoke is supposedly good for him, if he smokes a really great amount, he'd become colder and darker as a person. That is the reason he is avoided, feared, and dreaded. Desiree Rose hates guys who smoke, and never paid much attention to them. That is until she meets Shane at the police station, and boy was she taken aback by his cold yet tempting demeanor. My grandmother always told me how the world used to be loud and filled with noises that would give people headaches. I always thought she was crazy until she had to die for what she believed. The world nearly ended because of a nuclear war. The planet earth went into complete silence. After years and years of little communication among the survivors, our bodies had grown accustomed to hearing little to nothing. Grandmother calls it being "deaf." This year marks the 100th anniversary of the silence, and I'm about to find out how this came to be. Why grandmother was so worked up about letting the past be known to the public that she had to sacrifice herself for it. Finding the truth won't be easy since many have died because of it, but I'm about to dig it all up from the past. Cover By: antidotal DO NOT COPY.
