As a baby, Hiccup Haddock was taken by dragons from his home on Berk to the dragon sanctuary. Now, 20 years later, Hiccup is sent to watch over Berk with his Night Fury friend, Toothless. But, all does not go as planned and they end up stuck a little to close to home.

Berk's only heir is dead - killed by a Night Fury who took his body with it. But they can't wallow in their grief - they're Vikings. So they stand tall and continue on. But then the food runs out, taken by raiding dragons, and Berk, on the verge of death, comes before the infamous Dragon Chief, a man said to have the ability to control dragons. When Hiccup is taken from Berk, he discovers that he has a strange connection with dragons. Fleeing from this revelation, Hiccup tries even harder to be a normal Viking. Back on Berk, Hiccup accidentally shoots down a Night Fury. Hookfang, angry and still trying to convince Hiccup to give up the foolish viking ways, chases him across Berk. The chase ends with Hookfang being caged and Hiccup running into the woods to find the Night Fury he shot down from the sky. His bond with Toothless grows rapidly and soon they are basically inseparable. Unfortunately, events take a turn for the worst when someone informs the Chief of Hiccup's treachery.
