The Jail is gone. The Church is still being rebuilt. The Tent City is growing and so is the Crime Rate. Dogs are running rampant, cats are prohibited, but thankfully muffins are back on the menu. But with Busted Gulch's last Mayor being arrested for corruption, the office and job is now open. Who will be BG's next Mayor? Farm'n isn't for everybody, but I'm lucky enough to be born into it, and I have a sneak'n suspicion that folks'd be a lot happier if all of us could play in the dirt with God. So this collection will be bout dirt and the stuff that happens cause of it. I'm a big fan of dirt....

This is the story of the Summer of 2002. We were the Swamp Warriors...closer than kith or kin...we were tribe... we were born of the same dust. The Great Dismal Swamp was our playground, our hidey-hole... our territory. From the lake to the canal to dry cave... we knew it's lay like we knew our daddies faces. The Summer of 2002 was the last time I would ever be allowed to be fully myself and the last time we, all together, held hands and waded into deep water. BTW... I put this under short story cause noth'n fit. it ain't 'xactly humorous, ain't mostly fiction... it's a curiosity. ©Naomi Marshall 2017

It's my pleasure to share this eclectic mix of poem, prose, and song. These are stories from the Tidewater: that gentle land that slopes into the sea and cradles the Great Dismal Swamp. I hope you enjoy the read'n of em as much as I have enjoyed the tell' n. These tales started out, years ago as rough-hewn pine... raw and fresh-cut. Now, after a good bit of elbow grease and linseed oil, I hope they honor those who've kept the memories alive. Your comments are more important than those stars.

Kinda hate to admit to it... but these two short-short stories are mostly true....Full disclosure: I don't re-screen kitchen doors with spatulas, and I never spanked a pig. In 2014, two back-to-back ice storms hit the Tidewater. In 2015, the floods came. We stayed busy. ©Naomi Marshall 2017
