You see you were close as kids, you only being 3 years older. But her memories were wiped and you were no longer permitted to see her. Its powers come from you, and for that reason you must hide in the castle for protection, so the power of Voltron would be safe. When the Galra threat was highest you offered to give more power in order to make Voltron and lions stronger. But your father would not allow it. Doing so would likely kill you. You were not strong enough as a 15 year old, still a child.
