Clarke si trasferisce a Detroit, dopo la prematura scomparsa del suo migliore amico, con la speranza di ricominciare. La vecchia Mustang grigia si ferma davanti al viale della Ford High School. Sospiri salutando tua madre, soffermandoti un secondo sullo striscione giallo e blu che recita " Bentornati Trojans!", prima di scendere dall'auto. Attorno a te, gruppetti di ragazzi si ritrovano e salutano. Tu passi avanti, varcando la soglia della scuola e camminando per i corridoi costeggiati dagli armadietti color senape. -250... 251... 252, Eccolo!- Lasci scivolare le dita sul lucchetto, facendolo scattare. Svuoti lo zaino nell'armadietto, in silenzio. Non hai molta voglia di festeggiare nonostante sia una delle settimane migliori a scuola. -Ciao- una voce limpida dietro alla porta dell'armadietto, ti richiama dai tuoi pensieri. Con un tonfo metallico chiudi l'anta, ritrovandoti davanti ad una ragazza poco più piccola di te, ad occhio e croce dovrebbe essere del secondo anno. Indossa un abitino striminzito in denim, con una giacca di jeans smanicata. -Il mio nome è Octavia Blake.
