Global warming, global cooling, what if all the predictions are right? Or worse, what if all the predictions are wrong? Can humans truly hope to understand the complexities attendant on such changes, never mind explain their relationships and predict their effects? The people at WBI - Walden Biodiversity Institute - think they can. At the very least, they intend to prepare as well as possible for the changes to come, whatever they may be. This is not a story of tragedy and despair. This is a story of possibilities and hope, of dreams and perseverance. If you want to know what the future could bring, should bring, start here. " ...this future sounds amazing. Not for the first time, I wish the world was more like your stories..." Utopian dreams and technological innovations. Not merely airy wishful dreams of what it would be like to be there, but realistically hopeful dreams of how to get there. This story could be a revelation of what our next twenty years will bring.

Stories from another time and place to make you think, laugh, and possibly shed a tear. I know I did, but for me the stories are personal. This is for those who can appreciate the insanity of the world I was raised in. One should never judge the past by the standards of the present. Of course, that doesn't stop me from judging the present by the standards of the past. Age and a lifetime of hard-earned experience has earned me that privilege.

What if evolution took another path? If flimsy males stayed safely tucked away in caves with children, while females ventured outside to hunt? And matriarchy was the norm, with women ruling the earth? In this reverse world, Florian Fletcher, a shy IT student, makes ends meet by waitering in corporate events. During Brown Inc's annual gala, he catches the attention of the handsome Alexandra. At barely thirty, Alexandra Brown is the epitome of success--billionaire, self-made woman, most courted single of all Montreal. But something is missing. When wide-eyed, clumsy Florian enters her life, Alexandra's breath hitches. Randall Cashe, a mechanical and electrical engineer, joins a team of scientists in a Mars-mission habitat hoping to rake in a massive payday. Their goal: to produce their own air, water, and food while testing the building with simulated disasters. When the outside world succumbs to a lethal airborne pandemic, the hermetically-sealed structure is suddenly the safest place on earth. As tensions among the group of scientists rise, Cashe has every intention to not only survive, but thrive. After all, why would he let a world-wide apocalypse and a few murders prevent him from making a profit? The parts I publish initially will be 90% where I want them to be. ONC 2020 Grand Winner ~ ~ "When the halls run red with the poison of your life, I will rest. Until then, consider your ruin a promise of mine." ~ ~ Four years ago, Yin Ruwei sold her blood to the northern god Xuanwu in return for revenge. Now, after years of perfectly orchestrated deaths at hands that are not her own, she snaps and puts red in her ledger, killing a man personally. Mu'en is more brutal, more cunning . . . and less heartless than he'd wish the world to know. Someone has been killing off his men with all the fury of a hurricane. Tearstained anger blankets every death and he almost feels sorry for the murderer - until they kill the man he loves. Ruwei and Mu'en find themselves on two sides of the same coin, counting fate like they do the stars in the sky, hoping for a better day, a happier life, a brighter world in the shadows they call home. Sometimes you must seek what you've lost to retrieve it again. Sometimes that which you've lost can no longer be retrieved. And sometimes, just sometimes, those broken pieces find their way back to you. ~ ~ ONC 2020. Prompt 4. After I lay down to sleep on the night of October 2nd, the first eight lines came strongly into my mind. So I rose and printed the words down on a sheet of paper. Why those words? What did they mean? I am a mother of two grown sons who are artists and my heartbeat. The artwork is a zoom-in of my youngest adult son's painting.
