Maaike is een meisje van 15. Haar vader is een jaar geleden zomaar verdwenen en heeft haar en haar moeder alleen achter heeft gelaten. Haar moeder moet nu alleen het inkomen verdienen. Daardoor moet ze zeven dagen in de week werken. Daarom besluit ze Maaike naar een internaat te sturen. Op het internaat zijn vier sportclubs, twee voor meisjes en twee voor jongens. Als meisje zijnde kun je gaan dansen of hockeyen. Als je een jongen bent, kun je kiezen uit voetbal of rugby. Maaike voetbalde thuis op het hoogste nivieau en was ze geselecteerd voor West-Nederland. Dat had ze allemaal achter zich moeten laten. Alleen niemand wist dat. Toen ze hoorde dat er een voetbalclub was, was ze zo blij! Maar schijn bedriegd, geen enkel meisje mocht zelfs op het terrein komen. Het blijkt dat ze haar hard nodig hebben voor de landelijke competitie.
