Faith has fallen, darkness hoods the eyes of Ravka's civilians and soldiers. But one thing is clear in its motive; The Darkling has returned in fashion, bloody sword , bloodier hands, looking for one thing; Nikolai. In planes of the land unknown to the king, unheard of to the ear, unwritten in scriptures, a child, not of human blood nor named lineage, is born. A child, abilities unknown, birth-rite unknown, sacrificed twice over, emerges from the flames of a small village collected of Shu Han outlaws. Contumacious in behaviour, archaic in language, what the Shu could not control or constraint, brings a wave of hope to Ravka. As the king feasts on what could be a new wave of Ravkan renaissance, his son reminds him of a fatal error yet to occur; "False hope is a terrible thing, if it's the only thing keeping you alive you'll be dead by dawn."
