The palace is a graveyard of dreams and hope. It slowly lures you in with its mesmerizing beauty, giving silky promises of power and wealth. But as soon as you take a step into the mirage, the doors snap shut. Then you realize... The high palace walls are nothing more than a cage of bones. The peaceful lotus pool is simply a resting place for thousands of lost souls. And laughter and smiles are a weapon to kill you before you can even mutter a single word. When lucky, a remain or two may find its way out - a fragmented jade or two bloody teeth, a remembrance that this indeed was history. From her birth, she was chained by the invisible strings of fate. What was the palace but another prison? Her bargain was her freedom, and his bet was the future of the empire. He favored the land over her, so she chose herself over him. I'm pretty extraordinary (read: absolutely normal) for an average guy named Patrick- Patrick Kraker, and before you ask, no, I do not want a cracker; neither does Polly. Polly's sick of crackers. a) My summer job may or may not involve spray painting myself completely silver and standing motionless in the park. Of course not. b) I also may or may not be investigating and communicating with a homeless guy who is (possibly): one, not actually homeless and two, part of a cult of (probably) bloodthirsty satanic worshippers. *** Copyright © 2015 by unfurled All rights reserved #34 Humour Featured as of 28/04/16

The Empire of Cathay teeters on the brink of rebellion, and only the lost magic of Dragon Songs can prevent the realm from descending into chaos. Blessed with an unrivaled voice, Kaiya dreams of a time when music could summon typhoons and rout armies. Maybe then, the imperial court would see the awkward, gangly princess as more than a singing fool. When members of the emperor's elite spy clan uncover a brewing rebellion, the court hopes to appease the ringleader by offering Kaiya as a bride. Obediently wedding the depraved rebel leader means giving up her music. Confronting him with the growing power of her voice could kill her. THIS IS THE 3rd PERSON VERSION. "Shirayuki," he mumbled to himself. "That's a beautiful name." I could only look at him as he contemplated, his sake cup in font of him untouched. The snow outside had turned into a blizzard, the howls of the unforgiving wind blaring, clattering against the terracotta roof. The chill pierced through the wood-and-paper walls, but he seemed indifferent, his gaze still focused on the snow through the wooden shutters. "Thank you," I replied nervously. He finally brought the cup to his lips, and sipped in silence. "Sometimes," he said, his eyes getting slightly hazy, "I wonder how things could come down to this." "Didn't you yourself tell me not to question His Majesty?" I said, giggling. "Indeed I did," he chuckled, smiling at me, "But sometimes you can't just help but wonder." After a short silence, he spoke again. "What about you?" he asked me, "What do you think of all this?" "In my time with you, I have only come to understand so much," I replied, "So I don't really know." He seemed satisfied with my answer, and fell back to watching the snow through the window. I lied. I had lied straight through my teeth. Indeed, I do understand. In an empire of lies, there is no virtue. In a nation of delusions, there is no rationality. -cover edited by me-

DISCONTINUED In a land of white, the plains of ash stretch endlessly, devoid of all life except for one. Alone in this blank world, a boy falls in ink-black despair, having lost everything before he knew anything. In a stagnant town, connections and relationships are made and lost, as the seasons pass from autumn to winter. Alone in this monochrome world, a boy sinks into isolated apathy, having been granted everything, and having rejected everything. Through the machinations of a bartender who calls herself a goddess, those two parallel paths intersect for a singular, straightforward purpose. Change the world by changing a person. And thus unfolds an interdimensional tale of loss, life, and lies.
