He wants to be more than friends with Auggie, but their friendship is already fragile due to low self esteem on both sides, so he can't make it happen. He really likes Auggie, and is tired of waiting, so starts sending signals, to see if he has a chance getting with his love, his wonder. *The characters are 14 and 15 here.
