Dekker Johnson thought it would help heal the world of 2050 from The Breaking when he sold his algorithm that cracks any code or firewall on the planet. And his wife was murdered for it. Now an armed security detail protects him as he moves from one resort destination to another. But when a new member of the security detail is replaced, Dekker is forced to deal with something he's not comfortable with--and AI unit. He quickly find that things are not always what they seem in the new world if AI and quantum computing. The One Within is a near-future, science fiction, urban fantasy short story based in my Soul Jumpers series--a series I have yet to write. It explores the consequences of AI in the new world. BONUS DISCUSSION Also, periodically, I'll be posting chapters after the story's ending which will discuss the dangers of AI. Everyone's encouraged to join in on the discussion if you care to weigh in on the topic. AI is a dangerous venture, which is exactly why we see people like Elon Musk very uneasy about its development.

It was LA in the year 2O21. A new underground theme park called "The River Styx" had just closed down. "Too many mysterious deaths and unethical methods to get people to visit it," the official inquiry had reported. Only a chosen few had managed to make the dark journey down 'hell's river" before its demise, and Angel would be one of them. It was her obsession about the attraction--and her own mysterious connection to it which finally got him to take the voyage. Looking back, it was that first day in the photo lab, while trying to get the young model's image more metallic on the screen. That's when Angel suddenly appeared to him in the flesh--her face next to his in the blue light of the monitor. So what was it about this girl, he wondered? Why did she so obviously seek him out romantically as one of the few to take that mythological journey? He would only learn those details while navigating the subterranean river with her--an answer to forever disturb his soul? The year is 2117. The United States, up to this point, has been through three major World Wars. After World War III, the country didn't get much time to recuperate and reconstruct before a new foe surfaced and pushed all fifty states to their breaking point. Nine-foot tall Warriors known as the Jotunn Warriors were created, still a mystery to the remaining people of the United States--until now. States have been separated by color and traits and have their own strict rules for their inhabitants to follow and live by. Four out of fifty states remain, one of those being New York. Bay Zachary is an eighteen girl who lives in New York, a state now known as the Pure State. She has always felt out of place in her state and has a desire to venture past her state's borders. Bay gets a chance to escape the city with a Nebraskan rebel named Casper Bunk. Quickly, her self-desires to leave the deteriorating state turns into a mission to save her home state from the same fate of forty-five others. The Jotunn are eliminating states one-by-one, like dominoes toppling over. They must make an effort, no matter how minuscule the odds are to save what little is left. One nation? Under God? Indivisible? Liberty and Justice? The United States, only, the states were united no more, and they hadn't been for quite some time.
