But Stiles can't control his abilities, so Alan Deaton takes the boy under his wing, thus introducing him to the Hale pack. Derek and Stiles have a connection, both of them not able to control the gifts they have, and that connection turns into more. When the Hale house catches fire, Stiles shapeshifts into a fox to slip through the bars of the basement windows, going for help per Talia Hale's demands, but he gets trapped in the body he shifts into. It's been 10 years, Stiles still has no way of getting back and has lost all hope of any survivors, when a group of teenagers trying to save a werecoyote unintentionally change him back.

Stiles shoved another handful of curly fries into his mouth as a sudden growl echoed through the cafeteria. Stiles rolled his eyes "here we go again," he mumbled around the mouthful of food.

“I watched you for nights and all you and that voice talked about was you loving me,” Derek said. “Why are you in love with me? I’m overbearing, hurtful, angry all the time . . . what attracts you to me? The better we find what it is, the faster I can change it.”
